Auckland's brand new Wynyard Quarter - where the old 'tankfarm' is situated to the west of Viaduct Harbour. If you haven't visited yet, do go - it's worth a visit. On first rolling up, we thought; 'h'mmm, a bit raw' , and yes it is, but the bones are good. Real grass instead of artificial, in the petite Silo park, would have made a better impression but, I guess, time was against it. Maybe it is to be replaced after the RWC - I hope so. The little tram loop, and it is little, is quite fun - back to the future via 1930. But $10 - I don't think so. This is utter nonsense. It should be, and is only worth a small gold coin. It's a novelty and unless it eventually takes you somewhere - for instance, up Queen Street, or the bottom of Parnell rise, it will remain a novelty only used by a few one time visitors. I imagine the remaining tanks are set to go, and they need to - quite an eyesore in an area now shared with the public and 'hidden' by a tacky, multicolored tin fence. |

My jury is out on the concrete former cement silos. Something about them is quite sculptural but just as edifices with no real purpose - not sure? The walk east, past the Viaduct event centre and over the footbridge is quite satisfying. You walk past the Waiheke car ferry terminal, however many large trawlers are in port and maybe some larger vessels, dredges and tugs. The noises, smells and general industrious nature of these working boats invites you to linger and observe. The events centre building is stunning and will prove a real asset, with it's glass sided boardwalk leading up to a viewing deck from where an elevated view back the city and over an active harbour can be enjoyed.
